Re: [compost_tea] Composting Council

Elaine and others,

I will not be able to go to the composting council meeting. I was interested in hearing the presentations from the Europeans. There are quite a few,  and all quality based!!! Their approach to composting (as a blanket statement) seems to assume they are working with materials to make a good agricultural product as opposed to here, it is generally a waste reduction by-product. I looked at the flyer again, and see your presentation!!! "Control of Powdery Mildew on Grapes by Compost Tea Applications in Oregon Vineyards". I'd like to hear that. Has this been published somewhere? How can I get a copy? Anyhow, glad to here your views on CT will be represented!!!! And, very interesting to hear about Cindy Salter. Thanks for the info. very interesting...

I also notice there are 2 sessions on Clopryalid. Have you done any work to see if CT has any effect on Clopryalid contaminated compost? We don't have the Clopryalid use here in the eastern mid-west, but farmers will use over the label rate of 2-4-D, which will cause herbicide burn in peppers and peas the following year if used as mulch (my experience last season). I don't seem to have problems composting, given it heats okay...  I've never tested for residue. I suppose I could do a little trial in pots with compost and sterile potting mix...  We only apply compost to fields going to cereals or grass crops (corn, forage).

Are you going to the US composting council meeting?   there will be a second talk on tea, by a graduate student I work with - Kirk Waterstripe.
