[compost_tea] Wormgold Extractor and Solution
Dear Compost Tea List Serve,
Since this is Sunday December 8, 2002 we would like to
introduce our new Wormgold Extractors in 100 and 500 gallon
versions (patent pending), We have posted photos, tests results,
specifications and articles under files and photos on this site.
Our own website is under construction at this time to add this
information.
We have been testing prototypes of the units in the field for more
than a year with over 50 tests with SFI Lab alone. After molding
and remolding and making endless changes today we are
unveiling the final 100 gallon version at Cline Cellars Vineyard in
Sonoma County California and will be delivering it to Bob
Cannard in Sonoma who has purchased it. The 500 gallon final
mold is being manufactured presently.
We were doing University trials last winter and needed to make
great tea (solution) and were not happy with the brewer we tried
out at the time, so we decided to design our own for the trials.
We worked with SFI Labs (Elaine Ingham in Oregon and Paul
Wagner in New York) and agricultural end users in designing
these units. Customers asked to buy them, so we decided to
manufacture them. The solution has been used on vineyards,
nurseries, and landscapes throughout this development (read
customer experiences under files and see photos).
We have manufactured the Wormgold Extractors (for Diverse
Microbial Extraction and Culturing) to make Wormgold Solution.
These are custom molded fiberglass double-walled tanks.
Food Grade fiberglass is used on the inner tank. This is a very
slick, non-porous surface that can be easily wiped clean with all
rounded corners to eliminate anaerobic conditions. The 100
gallon tank is only 30 inches tall (the 500 gallon is 33 inches tall)
and the inside can be easily reached from the outside. There
are steps built into the unit so there is easy access from three
sides.
We have embedded heating elements in the bottom of the tank,
so temperature can be regulated for optimal microbial growth
and are presently working on cooling systems for warmer
climates. In our testing temperature proved to be a crucial factor
in the quality of extracted solution produced.
A reverse osmosis unit is included with the system for water
purification. We worked with our county water district lab and
Elaine at the beginning to determine water quality and the effects
on our final product, since our well water and city water were not
producing results. We are trying to reduce the variables, so
customers in any location will be able to get close to the same
results we get in our testing.
There is a coarse bubbler placed directly under a 16 inch
diameter basket x 13 inch deep (18 mesh) which holds the
ingredients. This bubbler extracts the microorganisms and
mixes the solution. There are 4 tubular diffusers for aeration
covering the entire bottom of the tank so every corner and the
bottom are moving throughout the cycle. There are no circulating
pumps in this system. The aeration manifold is in one piece
and easily taken out between cycles for cleaning.
We have had full analysis tests by SFI and Pathogen
Suppression Tests by BBC labs. The tests by BBC paralleled
the tests done by the University we were working with.
The SFI data are backed up by scientific studies, reported in the
Compost Tea Brewing Manual, where the relationship between
direct counts and disease suppression is clearly shown. If you
have coverage, or the set of organisms in the tea , and these are
sprayed onto the leaf surfaces with proper coverage, then the tea
will be suppressive. Two of our latest SFI Test Results for
Wormgold Solution 24 hour extraction (posted under files also)
are as follows:
11/19/02 Active Bacterial Biomass 45.4 Good
Total Bacterial Biomass 196 Good
Active Fungal Biomass 4.99 Good
Total Fungal Biomass 18 Excellent
Hyphal Diameter 3 Highly beneficial fungal species
present
11/26/02 Active Bacterial Biomass 71 Very Good
Total Bacterial Biomass 250 Very Good
Active Fungal Biomass 5.5 In good range
Total Fungal Biomass 15.8 Very Good
Hyphal Diameter 3 Highly beneficial community of
fungi present
The 100 gallon Wormgold Extractor costs $5500 + $1000 (for RO
unit) for a total of $6,500.
The 500 gallon Wormgold Extractor costs $11,500 + $1000 (for
RO unit) for a total of $12,500.
The 100 gallon Wormgold Base Mix and Activator costs $35
(includes everything)
The 500 gallon Wormgold Base Mix and Activator costs $70
(includes everything)
There are post production inoculants available also. The costs
vary depending on your soil analysis, crop production and
fertilizer program. Dr. Ingham will be recommending these
additions based on your SFI soil reports done prior to production
for each specific application.
February 13, 2003 there will be a seminar at Cline Cellars in
Sonoma County to introduce the Wormgold Extractors. SFI labs
will be presenting the educational program, as well as local
agronomists with tours of Cannard Farms and demonstration of
the Wormgold Extractors. If you would like to attend please let us
know and we can get you the information. If you have any
questions or would like more information please call
