I have seen several frosts where the low brix conventional wheat
crops were seriously yield reduced and the biological grown crop (mine and
another grower's) with elevated brix remained unaffected in the midst of the
carnage. I have not felt any pressing urge to 'prove' this as it seems to me
its common sense! We put anti freeze in our car cooling system - glycol -
something akin to sugar?? We keep ice cream in the freezer and if its any
good at all it wont freeze hard - maybe in part because of the high sugar
content? You could easily get data on this by testing plant sap from high
brix crop plants and low brix plants of the same variety and measuring the
extracted sap for freeze point temperature, should be simple for anyone with
access to a lab to do this. Me, I'm quite content to watch the neighbours
scratching their head trying to figure out why they have frost damaged crops
and I dont. I 've tried to pass the message on but the company agronomist
thinks brix is a bit of a joke and he has the floor at the moment so we
wait. Incidentally we are talking here of damage in the crop canopy not at
ground level.
