Re: [compost_tea] Difco Manual
FYI, there is a free Acrobat version of the 860 page Difco Manual
available online if you don't have access to the $80 printed copy.

I love it, Jeff. You sound like my microbiology instructor back at
Texas A&
M. All the different foods you could try to get something that would
grow
fungi. I had a lab project in high school that reminds me of you.....
: - ))
Just be careful about the fungi that get growing, ok? Starch from
potato is
a great medium for growing blight, wilt and other baddies.
You might look for a Difco catalog, which lists the different media
used to
isolate different fungi. That would also likely give you an idea of
what
kinds of fungi grow on the different kinds of carbon. The carbohydrate
and
starch media are best for the pathogens........
A generalization, true, but I'd avoid the starchy, carbohydrate, sugary
foods. Stick to the lignin, cellulose, humic and fulvic acid kind of
foods.
You could always send a sample of the fungi you are growing to SFI and
I'll
take a look at the fungi, tell you if they are good or bad!
Alternatively,
take your "cultures" to the local University and ask the mycologist
what they
think about what kinds of fungi you are growing.
I need spores on the fungi, if possible. Try not to breathe the spores
if
you should happen to produce a cloud of them, ok?
