[compost_tea] Worms and Microbes
I wonder how many of you have a wormery, or worm farm (or what-ever you call
it) from which you take vermi-compost for your CT? I have three of them -
two in old baths and one in the back of an old ute, and each get fed
different diets.
What has me fascinated is the response of the worms to half a bucket of old
wood chips which was covered in fungal hyphae. I thought I would dump it at
the back of the Ute where there was "finished" vermicast and very few
worms, and use it in my next CT. 24 hours later, to my surprise, the pile of
old wood chips was a writhing mass of worms and they had consumed most of
the fungal hyphae. Three days later they are still at it and, instead of a
pile, they seem to have spread it around.
I've always known about the "attractiveness" of microbes to worms and the
very close association in the soil between them, but I didn't expect to see
such a "feeding frenzy."
By the way, the last lot of vermicast I used in a CT still had quite a few
worms in it and at the end of the 48 hour brew they were still alive.
Amazing! I wonder if the aerated water kept them alive?
