One online source discusses this thusly:
"Does that mean I have to stop quoting other people's messages in my
discussion group postings?
"No. When you post to USENET -- or anywhere where quoting and forwarding of
messages is common -- you are probably giving an "implied license" to quote
and forward. In any case, because quoting and forwarding are customary on
public discussion groups, you should expect anything you post there to be
quoted and/or forwarded within the discussion group."

this list serve, is that message only meant for the eyes of compsot-tea
members? Basically a personal message to everyone on the list, and those
comments can't be taken to other places?
No, and of course the comments on this list are also archived, so all anyone
would need to see them would be to join up, and then access the members only
archives.
But, while your list comments can be quoted in a 'fair use' manner, you
still retain copyright and no one can write a book of, say, the collected
emails of Elaine Ingham, 2002-2003, and sell it without your permission.
As a general rule, people writing to email lists want their views to be
known, and welcome discussion from any interested source, so that forwarding
to another list with an interest in a topic is generally expected and even
welcome, and there is an 'implied license' to do so, which I suppose
individuals or entire lists can revoke if they choose to do so.
Some people out there apparently believe they can have it both ways,
bringing forward controversial claims on one list that apply to directly to
the central topic of another list, which has several members belonging to
the first list, and not expect to be quoted as the source of the
controversial claims to the second list.
In my opinion such people should increase their B-12 input or
something....;-)
