Re: [compost_tea] CT & Septic systems

Sorry to be so slow getting back to e-mails, but we just finished a three say introductory course to the soil foodweb here in Corvallis.

With respect to septic systems, typically there is a great deal of nitrate and other forms of N in the water coming out of a healthy septic system. Oaks don't need, or like, those high levels of N. So, add the biology to take up those excess N concentrations and get it moved into organic matter.

High nitrate and high ammonium levels help the pathogens (and often weeds) in the system "win" in compeition with the beneficial organisms. Lots of papers, and a book written on this topic.

The septic tank itself is very bacterial. So, as Steve suggested, maintenance by once a year applying fungal protection around the roots of the oaks, or other trees, will help your trees immensely.
