RE: [compost_tea] a request for compost tea literature

Allison,

Good Luck! Not too much out there is there. I am hoping that Elaine will someday publish some of her research in a peer reviewed journal. I was in the same boat a couple of months ago, searching and searching to no avail. The only articles I could find were either in journals like Biocycle (not PR) or were about anaerobic compost tea. There is a boatload of testimonials and some none replicated research but nothing concrete! When writing my grant proposal (which we just found out will be funded), I tended to use a lot of Hoitick's work on disease suppressive composts to back me up. I'm sure you have come across W. Brintons work with PM on grapes, but the article wasn't that impressive in terms of information and it was not the aerobic compost tea that we are all talking about.

Below is a short list of some of the articles that I came across, but not much help for building a case for compost tea.

1)	BioCycle: 1997: Applying CT to prevent potato blight. May : 53 Sorry do not have an author

2)	Brinton, W and Droffner M. The control of plant pathogenic fungi by use of compost teas. Biodynamics. 1995 ; 197 ; 12-15

4)	Hoitink, H A, and P C Fahy. 1986. Basis for the control of soilborne plant pathogens with composts. Annual Reviews of Phytopathology. Vol 24. 93-114

5)	Hoitink H A, Inbar Y, and m J Boehm. 1991. Compost can suppress soil-borne diseases in container media. American Nurseryman. Sept 15; 91-94

6)	Andrews, J H and R E Harris. 1992. Compost extracts and the biological control of apple scab. Canadian Journal of Plant Pathology 14 ; 240

7)	IPM Practitioner: volume XXIII, number 9, Sept 2001. Article is about compost tea. Sorry do not have an author.

8)	Quarles, W. 2001. Compost tea for organic farming and gardening. The IPM Practitioner. Vol 23: No 9 : 1-8

9)	Weltzien HC. Control of downey mildew, Plamopara viticola (de Bary) Berlese et de Toni, on grape vine leaves through water extracts from composted organic wastes. Journal of Phytopathology. 1986; 116:186-188

Subject: [compost_tea] a request for compost tea literature

Hi everyone, this is my first posting.

I heard about this group through a fellow volunteer at the Cornell
Cooperative Extension Master Composter program. I'm currently a
MS/PhD student in the Crop and Soil Science Department at Cornell
University and am hoping to do my thesis research on the disease
suppressiveness of compost tea. I've been here since August and I'm
having a lot of trouble finding research articles about compost tea
to base my research on. I've found some articles in Biocycle and
Compost Science and Utilization, which are a good start, but I really
need articles from peer-reviewed scientific journals in order to plan
my project. If anyone has any references they could send my way, I
would greatly appreciate it. I've heard a lot of talk about
scientific proof in the compost tea world, but unfortunately I need
to see the data to get started on generating more good data!

Thanks,
Allison
