Thanks, Elain: The osmotic aspect did not occur to me. I would think that what the usual practice here of using CaCN2 or CaO to sterilize the soil is mostly the osmotic effect instead of the supposed (high) temperature as what people has been thinking.

the concentration of Ca oxide (this is a salt, it has osmotic effects, that is what will kill the microbes) would be the important thing.  The best way to know for certain is to look at a drop of the tea before adding the salt, and then look at anohter drop after adding the material.
