[compost_tea] New Dirt Smell

>From the June 2003 Discover magzine (page 16):

Keith Chater, a microbial geneticist at the John Innes Center in Norwich,
England, an his colleagues, have traced the origin of geosmin, the source
of new-dirt smell. It's from the bacterium Streptomyces coelicolor.

So if your tea smells good and earthy, it's probably got a bunch of S.
coelicolor bacteria!
