The strawb growers I am working with use Cal Nitrate as the main Nitrogen
and Ca input through the fertigation system. However this will result in
excess nitrates in the soil and hence in the plant and Elaines (I think)
work has shown that excess nitrates in plants causes botrytis and other
plant disease. So we have to get soluble Ca into the plant in other ways,
the way we are doing it is to use ultra fine grind Calcium carbonate (under
7 micron average) in a suspension form combined with cobalt and Boron with
Humic acid through the fertigation.
However I do not believe this will work unless it is combined with biology,
that is the soil food web has to be functioning, fungi has to be functional
and in large enough biomass to deliver the Ca to the plant. Elaine has
mentioned the direct relationship between fungi in the soil as well as Ca in
plants and Ca availability in the soil basis reams style test. (data set is
growing) .
So ....... Cal nitrate as per dan skows recomendations work well, if done to
excess will result in disease.
