> 3. Add a little molasses. This will give the microbes some extra
food. For 5G you can use 1/4 cup or less.
1/4 cup of molasses is not "a little" in a 5 gallon brew.
Why do you want to add that much food to a brew that is in transit?
It's oxygen you need more than food, and if you over-favor the B in
your tea, you can endanger what F you have going for you. Molasses
feeds both B and F. If you have to give good, why not use something
that favors F more?
If there's no food, the critters will just go to sleep and they
won't be using more oxygen by reproducing. The rapidity with which
B numbers multiply at the end of the brew cycle is astounding,
because they are doubling, and double a very big number of B is a
lot of B.
Add too much food at the end of a brew and two things can happen.
1) brew is pushed anaerobic because of low aeration and continued B
reproduction or 2) some amount of molasses not used up by the
bacteria - not sure how much it would take -- could cause a bloom of
bacteria in the soil and the nitrogen could be sucked up by the B -
plant could get yellow.
For post brew and pre-application to my brews -- for the purpose of
activating any sleeping B, Paul Wagner told me to add "a drop" of
fish hydrolysate to the tea just as I'm getting ready to apply.
But then, I haven't brewed as much as you have, so maybe this is all
baloney. Take it for what it's worth -- zero??
