Thanks, Elaine -

Now I remember our conversation about molecular
analysis methods, something in particular underway
at Michigan State Univ.

Some of the molecular microbial analysis methods
I've found include:

polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE)

thermal gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE)

single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP)

terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP)

Combinations:

polymerase chain reaction (PCR) -- denaturing gradient gel
electrophoresis (DGGE)

I can see why SFI uses microscopy as a commercial
microbial analysis method. The molecular techniques
are research-based; complex; expensive; slow.

Yet, altogether great leaps in microbial insight
are coming into the light.
