Yep, John, you have the answer.

But better to not have to clean them. That's why I like pipe with simple holes. When the pipe starts getting fouled, you can see it, and then clean it. With the air filter stones, you often don't know the insidious bio-film is present and the waste product killing the good guys.

Wish it wasn't so, but it is.
