Hi Bill -

There is no data to show that carbon or silica are actually transmuted to calcium.  Sorry, but that whole "data" set was based on someone not recognizing that chemical extractants do not extract microbial-biomass.  Bacteria and fungi tie-up nutrients in forms that the extractants do not touch, and predators of bacteria and fungi make nutrients available in compaltely different forms, at times.  If you don't recognize that exchange, then fuzzy logic leads to the kinds of conclusions that were made about "transmutation" of chemical elements in soil.  No solid proof there.

There are many papers on microorganisms solubilizing nutrients from parent material, or from the sand, silt, clay and rock.  Please read the current issue of Applied Soil Ecology.  Or Biology and Fertility of Soil.

There are quite a number of papers showing that predator - prey interactions release nutrients in the root zone, which improved plant nutrient concentrations.  See the SFI website for a list of these papers in my CV.
