Roots are sponges. So some of the liquid is 'adsorbed' (not the right word =
as there is active and passive transport, osmosis and diffusion) into the r=
oot. In addition, these liquids contain microscopic particles that the mic=
robes eat. And, microbes absorb liquids, too, I believe.

This is a fascinating area. There is lots on the web if you want to google =
around for a while.
