Re: [compost_tea] Brix response

Brix is the dissolved sugars and solids in the plant sap. Easily measure=
d with a refractometer by putting a drop of juice squeezed from the leaf on=
to the glass and veiwing through the eyepeice to read the percentage of sug=
ars. (some plants are not easy to get even a drop out of)

I'm still learning just what this can tell us so help from someone more fam=
iliar is welcome. It is an indication of photosynthetic activity and plant=
health. I have heard of reports linking high brix levels with pest and dis=
ease resistance. The contrast between a reading late in the day and first=
thing in the morning will indicate how effectively the plant is moving sug=
ar back down. An upwards movement in the reading after applying an input s=
uch as ACT should indicate a positive response by the plant. From what Ll=
oyd is saying the plant can tell you if it likes your tea.

Cheers Matt Leamy

From the context of the messages, I've been trying to figure out what Bri=
x is, but have not yet done so. Would someone please give a brief explanati=
on?

  Thanks.

I have a refractometer and have been making general observations with i=

Why make life difficult? This is sooooo simple, If=
your tea stinks - dont put it out! , if you get a negative brix response -=
dont put it out! If your tea smells nice and gives a positive brix respon=
se it is doing good, and you can use it as a foliar.
Of course there are some on the list that dont believe in the worth=
of brix testing, so they get to do things the hard way.
