Yep, the calculation is for those wanting to think about how much of any salt
could be added to soil, without causing damage to the biology.
The easiest way to assess whether soil is "tto salty" already, or to
determine whether manure, for example, is too salty to be used, is to measure
electrical conductivity. There are simple, hand-held units available from Pike Ag
Supplies, for about $190.
