Oh no, Elaine is making me think.
 
All I really know about these guys is that they are very close with Mass DEP, and they were used to clean up a diesel spill in one of the tunnels of the Big Dig, and also for a spill here in New Bedford.
 
Their website says that their product conatins 140 billion hydrocarbon digesting microbes per ounce, that are contained in a bentonite clay carrier. You spread this over the spill and then add water. The microbes are supposed to break the oil down into CO2, water, and soluble fatty acids. They were a little vague on what they do with the soluble fatty acids.

They use materials that absorb the spills, right? But that doesn't get rid of the toxic material. What happens when the absorbent breaks-down? Do the toxics "come back?",
