Re: [compost_tea] beneficial fungi in ACT
Hi Soil Guy -
As I am always careful to explain, in general, on average, wide diameter
fungi, with some coloration (tan, gold, red, dark brown), with regular septa, are
in the beneficial category.
In comparison with other groups of narrower diameter fungi, these narrower
diameters are groups of fungi where most of the species are disease-causers.
Oomycetes, much narrower diameter fungi, generally with adventitious septa,
and hyaline, are GENERALLY disease-causing fungi.
OK? I'm not saying that without exception all Basidiomycetes are beenficial.
I have said, over and over, that in general, as a broad categorization, wide
diameter hyphae are beneficials.
Unless you really wish to pay thousands of dollars to assess full species
diversity of fungi in your materials, generalizations which do not require
thousands of dollars to get an idea of what is going on, are useful. Not perfect,
but useful.
