I've been told by people who grow commercial orchids that the "special"
thing about the medium for orchids is that they require specific mycorrhizal
fungi,

As long as you get them in the soil, the orchids do well. But these are
different mycorrhizal fungi than what you typically buy for garden, turf, etc.

You need to get the inoculum of the orchid mycorrhizal fungi from someone
growing healthy mycorrhizal fungi. And that to your orchid soil, with foods
(bark works), and happy orchids, if the mycorrhizal fungi survive transfer, and
grow on the orchid roots.

If you mess up, and over-water, the fungi can be lost..... And then, no
orchids, or maybe orchids that never bloom.

How do you know if you have the mycorrhizal fungi? Send some roots in for
testing.
