[compost_tea] Sudden oak Death (SOD)
Hi Gary and all, Sudden oak death is not new, it is one of 2 Fungii
naturally occuring in garden soil. The real problem is the
inooculation of non host species through non finished composts and
mulch, if the fungus gets into a soil mix in a nursery setting, the
state Ag dept. will quaranteen the site and sometimes the City/
county/ or even that part of the state until the infestation is
checked.
Buyers from other states like Florida have, in the past,
temporarily banned (All) nursery stock imports from the state of
California only on the threat of the disease. Locally I know of a
Macadamia farm that was 60% wipped out by SOD (Encinitas off of El
Camino Real and Manchester up hill of Greek Temple) The infection
spread through the grove like wild fire.
This may put a whole new spin on Fungal innoculants in organic
fertilizer mixes, and the new agri-business of Truffle farming.
