1995 Theme: A New Beginning
AFGC Enters its Second Half Century in Lexington, Kentucky
The Kentucky Forage and Grassland Council and the 1995 Central
Planning Committee invite you to Lexington, Kentucky, March 12-15, 1995 for the annual meeting of AFGC. The meeting theme is "A
New Beginning" reflecting the forward vision of AFGC as it enters
its second half century. Mark your calendar and fill out the
registration forms today.
Lexington is the centerpiece of the Bluegrass region of Kentucky
and is the home of the thoroughbred horse industry. Lexington is
rich in history (the home of Henry Clay and Nancy Todd Lincoln)
and beauty and extends a warm welcome to the members of the
American Forage and Grassland Council.
Kentucky is very much a forage-livestock state, growing over
300,000 acres of alfalfa and approximately 5.5 million acres of
tall fescue for hay and pasture. Kentucky also has the most cows
of any state east of the Mississippi. We hope that you will come
to Lexington and share our excitement in the future of efficient,
profitable and sustainable forage/livestock production systems.
The meeting will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown
Lexington, which is interconnected by inside skyways to the Civic
Center Shops and other downtown buildings.
Daily Highlights
Sunday, March 12. Morning board meeting followed by afternoon
tour of bluegrass beef cattle farms, a nationally known
thoroughbred horse farm, and the Kentucky Horse Park.
Monday, March 13. The day begins with the Industry Breakfast at
6:30, with registration open at 8 AM. The day's program is
directed specifically at the forage/hay/livestock producer and
will include the best of current research and leading farmer
practices as well as a forward outlook on those practices that
will make and keep the forage-livestock farmer profitable. Look
forward to outstanding presentations by nationally known speakers
who will address the value of forages to agrculture as well as
the latest research and innovations in grazing, hay production,
establishment and other topics. In addition, the National Forage
Spokesperson Contest will feature forage farmers selected from
across the United States and Canada as leading forage producers.
Find out how these farmers are making forages work for them on
their farm. The Affiliate Council Advisory Committee, followed by
the Roundtable Discussion (see the article in this newsletter)
and the "Kentucky Night" will conclude the day.

through the rolling country side past several horse farms before
crossing the Kentucky River and viewing the spectacular palisades
and the sheer rock walls surrounding the river. Arrive at the
beautifully restored Shaker Village and experience the country
buffet breakfast for which Shakertown is famous. After breakfast,
you will tour the restored Shaker village, which was America's
most successful communal religious society. The Shakers were a
celibate, religious sect that lived here from 1805-1923,
inventing such things as the washing machine and the flat broom.
In addition, the Shakers were the first to package garden seed.
Most people are aware of the Shaker architecture, copied by
architects today and studied by builders from all over the world.
At the village, there are over 26 original buildings and
impressive stone walls, build in the 1800's by the Shakers. Your
tour will also include craft demonstrations, a special musical
presentation, museum, and gift shop.
Tuesday, March 14. Keeneland Breakfast and Horse Farm Tour. 8 AM

workouts at the rail as the horses trot, gallop, walk or breeze
on the track with their exercise rider in command. The next stop
will be a thoroughbred breeding farm where you will see famous
stallions, hear about the breeding procedures and visit the
breeding barn, walk through the stallion barns and see the horse
cemetery.
