Re: Gama Grass
Response to Miles Huffacker request for info on eastern gamagrass
Miles, I will mail you two Forage Facts (no. FF2050 and FF2051) from the
Univ. of Arkansas Coop. Extension Service. I am not in extension, but
our extension service is not networked (yet). These Forage Facts were
written by B.J. Hankins, Extension forage agronomist in the Little Rock
office. FF2050 is titled Eastern gamagrass - An overview. FF2051 is
Eastern gamagrass - Establishment and care.
The variety 'Pete' is described in FF2050. Here's what it says:
- The first certified variety of eastern gamagrass.
- Was jointly released in 1988 by the USDA and SCS.
- Was first made available to farmers in 1991.
- Was developed from a composite of seed collected from 70 native
populations growing in Kansas and Oklahoma.
- Is suited mainly for hay and pasture, but could also be ensiled.
- The parentage of Pete was tested as PMK-24.
Four seed sources are listed in FF2051:
Shepard Farms, 1-800-327-0211
Gamagrass Seed Co., Rt. 1 Box 111A, Falls City, NE 68355, 1-402-245-4639.
Mott Ranch Inc., Iuca, KS 67066, 1-316-546-2575
Sharp Brothers Seed Co., Rt 4 Box 237A, Clinton, MO 64735, 1-816-855-7551.
This is the kind of information that needs to be added to Dave Hannaway's
FIS on the Web. This way, Miles would simply click on eastern gamagrass,
then he'd able to download all the extension fact sheets written on this
species from various states. I urge forage educators, extensionists and
researchers to develop a web site to plug into FIS. I'm working on one now.
Another person who knows more than I do about eastern gamagrass is Rich
