Re: Tall Fescue in the Northeast

To: Tim Griffin: From Bill Pardee, Cornell, wdp5@cornell.edu
Several seed companies sell forage type tall fescue in Maine. Two I know
of are Agway and Hoffman Seeds. Agway's main outlet in Maine is Central
Maine Feed Co, Located at Detroit, ME in Somerset county. Phone 207-487-5589
They carry Johnstone and Fawn, both endophyte free. I can't speak for the
winter-hardiness of these varieties, both developed in Kentucky. At this
time of year they might not have tall fescue seed in stock, but can order
it from central Agway Inc. The Hoffman seed co is represented by the
Paris Farmers Union, S. Paris ME, 207 743-8946. They carry BarCel as a
forage tall fescue variety, which has done well in trials in PA and
elsewhere. This variety originally come from Europe. Hoffman tells me that
it is plenty winter-hardy enough for Maine. Again, because of the timing,
your local dealer may have to order in seed.
