Hay & Feed Fair
The Central Oregon Hay Growers Association is holding a Hay & Feed
Fair (see attached article).
The association has just re-organized in 1995. Has anybody out there
had experience with putting on a hay & feed fair? If so, how is it
going? What has worked well? And, what has not worked? Any
thoughts, ideas would be welcome.

HAY & FEED FAIR
The Central Oregon Hay Growers Association is sponsoring a Hay & Feed
Fair to be held at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds, Redmond, Oregon
on Saturday, October 28. The fair will be held in the Sheep Barn
(right behind the main fair office) and will begin at 9:00 a.m. and
run until 4:00 p.m. Admittance will be free. Members of the C.O.
Hay Growers Assoc. can market their hay free, all other producers
will be charged a $10 fee. All kinds of hay, and grass and cereal
straw are welcome. Producers should bring two representative bales
of hay or straw for each lot to sell. All sizes of bales are
welcome; we will have a forklift or grapple fork available to unload
and load sample lots. A large number of sellers and buyers can be
brought together. Even if producers have their hay sold for this
year, it still offers an opportunity to showcase your product to many
potential buyers for the future as well as compare value and
marketing strategies.
Producers and commercial feed stores are invited to market cereal
grains (barley, triticale, oats, wheat, spelt, corn, etc.) to
processed feeds, supplements and other feedstuffs a well as hay and
straw. Registration fee for producers is $10 and for commercial feed
stores $35, unless they are members of the C.O. Hay Growers Assoc.
and there will be no fee. Only one fee will be charged, not two fees
for each area. It is requested that either a five gallon pail or
sack of grain represent the lot to be marketed.
Educational displays on hay and grain grades, type and quality will
be featured. Details are being worked out to feature a number of
speakers thoroughout the day to talk about what is dairy quality hay,
export markets, hay certification program and feed quality and
livestock requirements. Potential buyers (dairies, exporters,
brokers, small acreage ranchers, etc.) will be contacted through
personal contacts, news releases through local, regional and state
newspapers, Ag publications, radio stations, computer forage and
dairy networks and TV. A "concessionaire" will have lunch, drinks
and snacks available during the event. For more information and to
register, contact Mylen at the OSU Crook County Extension Office
(503)447-6228. We need the registrations by Tuesday, October 10th,
so follow up contacts can be made with potential buyers and sellers.
