A week or so ago Gary Winn asked about research or tricks to control deer
damage and Suzi Rubin mentioned the "peanut butter fence". We use this
fence around research plots and it has been effective. These areas are
relatively small but it is my understanding that it works well for larger
field situations. The University of Maryland has an Extension Bulletin (EB
354) entitled "Controlling Deer Damage in Maryland" that describes this
fence as well as some other options. While most of our publications are
still free, this one costs $1.50. Copies can be requested from:
