Planting dormant seeds
Hi everybody:
Since joining the group, I am finding the discussions extremely
interesting. We have recently been able to induce dormancy in grasses
including ryes, fescues, red top, etc. This dormancy can be released by
winter-chilling. Dormant seeds of these grasses planted in the fall
produced larger stand than those produced by nondormant seeds the following
spring. I am wondering if overseeding of one of the dormant grasses, e.g.,
rye (after inducing dormancy) with nondormant rye or a fescue in the fall
would improve the forage quality in the fall as well as spring. I am
hearing that ryes do not do too well in the winter in Wisconsin and other
Northeast states in the US. Perhaps this strategy of planting dormant seeds
with nondormant seeds might work. Would there be interest in conductiung
further research in this area? I would appreciate any comment by
professional grazers?
