MS Research Assistantship Available
	New Mexico State University
	Las Cruces, NM

A master's degree research assistantship is available beginning fall 1996 in
the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business at New
Mexico State University. The assistantship is 20 hours/week, pay is
$11,490/year, and out-of-state tuition is waived. Students may take up to
two years to complete the degree.

The research will be conducted on a SARE-grant funded project, " Extending
the Grazing Season and Integrating Livestock to Sustain Small Ranches in the
Southern Rockies." The objectives of the project are the following:

1. To determine the ability of forage Brassicas and oats to provide
late-season forage, and hairy vetch and winter rye to provide early-season
forage, when overseeded into sweet corn stalks.
2. To determine the profitability of overseeding forage Brassicas, oats,
hairy vetch, and winter rye into sweet corn stalks in terms of heifer
average daily gain.
3. To determine the ability of forage Brassicas and spring oats overseeded
into established pastures to provide increased late-season forage.

Applicants for the assistantship should have a minimum 3.0 GPA in their
undergraduate program to be accepted at NMSU. Applicants are sought who have
a combination of experience/education/interest in as many of the following
as possible: agricultural economics, farm/ranch management, sustainable
agriculture research, integrated small crops/livestock farming. Applications
from individuals with undergraduate degrees in animal/range science or
agronomy/horticulture will be considered. The assistantship can cover a
semester in which such students could make up any economic theory,
statistics, or calculus undergraduate course deficiencies that they may have.

The research will be conducted in northern New Mexico. (Las Cruces is in
southern New Mexico.) Travel funds are also available to assist the student
in data gathering.

Interested applicants should immediately contact Dr. Constance L. Falk,
Associate Professor, Dept. Agricultural Economics and Agricultural Business,
