Alsike clover
Yesterday I attended a seminar at the Atlantic Veterinary College
(Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada) on liver failure in horses.
This case involved 4 horses - a Shetland pony, a filly (quarter horse)
and two mature horses. The pony becames ill and died and the
postmortem indicated liver problems. The other three horses were found
to have problems - the most severe was the filly. All have been fed hay
with about 30% alsike clover in it. The hay was changed and all
recovered within a month. These details are not specific as I am not a
veterinarian. If anyone wants more details, I can put you in touch with
those at the College.
I had heard of alsike clover in pasture causing photosensitization, but
never causing liver problems in horses. Apparently there is anecdotal
evidence of this. Is this a common occurence with horses fed alsike
hay? Should we recommend no alsike in mixtures for hay for horses?
Alsike is a common component of mixtures here.
