Graduate Assistantship - Alfalfa Biomass Energy project

Graduate Research Assistantship - Ruminant Nutrition

A graduate student research assistantship is available in the Department of
Animal Science at the University of Minnesota as part of an alfalfa
biomass energy project. The student will be a member of a multi-disciplinary
team involving animal scientists, agronomists, engineers, and economists
at the university working with the Minnesota Agri-Power Project
(MAP). This is a US Department of Energy funded project to develop
an electricity generation system utilizing alfalfa hay. The system concept
is to separate alfalfa hay into a stem fraction for gasification in the
production of electricity and to produce an alfalfa leaf meal co-product
for animal feed. The MAP includes the Minnesota Valley Alfalfa
Producers (a 200+ member farmer cooperative established as part of
MAP), Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Tampella Power, and
Polsky Energy Systems. The project is now in the engineering drawings,
permiting and operations planning phase. MAP expects to begin
construction of the power plant within two years and be operational
by 2002.

The University of Minnesota's role in this project is to assist the
farmer cooperative in the evaluation and development of forage
production, harvesting, transportation and storage systems.
Additionally, we are evaluating the potential value of alfalfa leaf
meal products in dairy, beef and turkey diets. This graduate
assistantship will support the dairy portion of the leaf meal
evaluation. The student will be involved in a series of trials
examining issues of protein quality and availability, and
complimentarity of the leaf meal with other by-product feeds
in lactating cow diets. The student will have the opportunity to
work with a diverse group of scientists and interact extensively with
the farmer cooperative and its partners in the MAP.
