Hi Nate...We did two years of manure topdressing research on alfalfa, for
Pioneer. Used liquid manure at about 4000 gpa within a week of taking
first cut. We ensiled the second cut, both uninoculated and inoculated
with Pio 1174 and 1177S. We measured pH, vomitoxin, and a whole bunch
of other things including lacotbacilli, mold, yeast, strep, clostridia,
and temperature+vomitoxin a week after opening which would simulate
bunk life. In short, we found no important differences, manured alfalfa
made as good a silage as unmanured. We didn't take yields, we did that
a couple of years before and found no significant differences though
the trend was to higher yields with manure.
