Jim Gerrish serves as the principal agronomic researcher at the University of MissouriForage Systems Research Center where he has been located since 1981. His research focuses on plantsoilanimal relations in grazed pastures. Significant research accomplishments include the quantification of factors affecting grazing periods and harvest efficiency of forage crops, and impact of grazing management systems on animal performance and economic return. He has been recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in the field of pasture ecology. Jim was cofounder of the very popular 3day grazing management workshop program at the Forage Systems Research Center. These schools have been attended by over 1600 producers and educators from 37 states and four Canadian provinces. Several other states have initiated grazing workshops based on the Missouri model. He typically speaks at 50 to 60 producer oriented workshops, seminars, and field days annually in Missouri and other states. Together with his wife Dawn, and four children, he stays in touch with the real world on a 260 acre commercial cowcalf and stocker operation. He is past President of the Missouri Forage and Grassland Council and serves on the Board of Directors of Green Hills Farm Project, a grass roots producer support group. Another noted speaker will be Dr. Tom Griggs from the University of Idaho at Moscow. Tom will be talking about the biological and physiological basis of grazing management. This will include information on phytomers, growing points, growth and development, rooting reserve carbohydrates, canopy management, and leaf areagrowth rateregrowth rateforage qualityrate of intake relationships. Topics to be covered at the workshop include: Introduction to managementintensive grazing, the physiological basis of grazing management, soil fertility and pasture fertilization, irrigation management for pastures, grass varieties for pasture and hay, matching forage and livestock resources, livestock health considerations with managementintensive grazing, environmentally responsible grazing for riparian areas, economics of managementintensive grazing, and the layout and design of grazing systems. There will be a managementintensive grazing producer panel, a panel discussion with all of the speakers. The first day will also include an evening mini tour of a ranch that is doing managementintensive grazing and a tour of the irrigated and dryland grass and legume trials at the Central Oregon Agricultural Research Center. The workshop begins with registration from 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on May 13, with the presentations beginning at 10:00 a.m. and concluding at 5:00 p.m. The May 14 presentations begin at 9:00 a.m. and will conclude at 5:00 p.m. The conference fee is $70 per person or $120 per couple, and this will include lunches, breaks, and materials.
