several months of the year, and of semi-arid areas where runoff is sudden and
massive.
I know this is the case here in Israel, and you may want to see if someone has
studied, say, the effect of drainage schemes in areas of the Negev wilderness that
are being farmed: there are parallel conditions in Jordan and elsewhere.
In Hebrew this seasonal stream is called a "nahal". In Arabic, it's a "wadi".
