Re: (Fwd) Re: squash borers
Squash borers have done in many of my crops. The best is a multi-pronged
strategy. Yes, late planting and rowcovers are good (as per Libby
Goldstein). I also look for the eggs of the vine borer starting in late
June into July. They're round and yellow and on the undersides of leaves.
I smash them. I also watch for the moths (the fly at dusk, orangey red),
and I try to smash them. Sounding pretty violent, I know. I also have
found that winter squash (acorn squash, especially) are far less
attractive or susceptible to vine borer damage. Another squash I am
growing (a winter hubbard type called JADE A from Garden City Seeds in
Montana) has been borer free for two years, now. And it's so rampant that
loosing a few vines wouldn't bother it.
Good Luck,
JJ
