Sugar prices are high at the moment- why do you want to stop your
neighbors from growing sugarcane? Will they get higher profits from an
alternative like banana? if they did, they'd probably be growing it.
There are some sustainable systems using sugarcane being developed now in
some Asian countries,especially in the Philippines (Negros) - mixed
sugarcane/livestock, using not only the bagasse but processed sugar as a
livestopck feed, using the manure as fertilizer etc.
I think it's important to keep in mind that sustainable has to be profitable.
