Larry,
The number of babies born has decreased every year since 1986, and is
now down the mid 120's millions. The number of potential mothers in
the world will start and continue to drop after 1998-99. The number
of children per mother has already dropped everywhere, most adically
in Uganda, Kenya and Nigeria, where it is down from over six to well
under four in the past ten years.
The only reason we have an increase in population is the exploding
number of old folks, since life expectancy continues to increase.
This will continue for about another 58-65 years -- the amount of
eventual life expectancy minus the time since 1986.
The neat thing about demographics is that a lot of it is not guessing
or making up stories: you're just counting the people already born and
looking at how old they are.
Cheers,
-dlj.
