Structural reforms in Indian economy / <ed. by> Devadas Bhorali. -- New
India : Mittal Publications, 1995.
Interesting conservative study, with two chapters on agriculture.
One chapter covers a study which projected crop increases under
various sustainable and non-sustainable systems. Concludes that
"Production without any modern inputs such as fertilizer, etc, but with
scientific and intensive field management" and an actual REDUCTION in the
amount of irrigation would provide adequate increase of production for
self sufficiency in the district of Assam. The major roadblock is land
distribution with holdings being too LARGE for intensive management due
to farmer dislocation due to local debt structures.

Fertilizers as a source of cadmium. -- Paris : Organization for Economic
Co-
operation and Development, 1996.
(OECD proceedings )
Cadmium occurs as a contaminant in many Phosphorus rock deposits which
are mined for fertilizer. It has contributed to food contamination and
soil contamination. The aim of this paper by this very conservative
organization is to develop new "attainable standards" (i.e. lower
standards) in light of the omnipresence of excessive levels of cadmium in
certain phosphorus mines, and a "balanced flux" (i.e. non-source point
pollution) as "sustainable" (i.e., now it ain't my problem, it's yours).
The authors refuse (explicitly)to consider the environmental inpacts of
this flux.Lots of data. Raises more issues around over limeing of fields.
