FROM: Kat Griffith, Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, Wisconsin

ATTACHMENT: The following formatted message is attached in MS Word 6.0

A two-day media workshop for sustainable agriculture activists will be
offered on February 9-11 in Iowa, following the Midwest Sustainable Agriculture Working Group meeting. The workshop will cover
various media skills (message development, effective media writing,
interviews and public speaking, media tactics, producing radio spots, getting media coverage of events, creating media plans, and i
ntegrating media into existing outreach and education activities.) The
trainers will be from the Safe Energy Communications Council, which has provided highly regarded workshops to environmental act
ivists nationwide. The workshop is funded by the W.K. Kellogg
Foundation.
Cost: Tuition will be free. Participants will cover their own
transportation, room and board. Room and board will cost about $75 per person. A $50 deposit must accompany your registration form.
Accomodations: The 4-H camp is a 45 minute drive from Des Moines. It
has dormitory-style accomodations, with four bunks per section. There are also cabins available, though these have no bathroom f

hotel about 15 minutes away -- you may make your own arrangements to stay there (see registration form.)
Timing: The workshop will follow the Midwest Sustainable Agriculture
Working Group meeting, held in Des Moines through 1 pm. on Sunday. The Media Workshop will begin at 4 pm. Sunday afternoon and w
ill run until 1:00 pm. on Tuesday.
Eligibility: Anyone working in sustainable agriculture advocacy
(particularly with IFS, SAWG or the Campaign) may attend. The workshop will be particularly useful for those who already work to some d
egree in communications, education and outreach. Sessions will address
the needs of program staff as well as farmer collaborators and project spokespeople. Participants should be committed to doing
media work as an integral part of their outreach work following the
workshop. Organizations and projects may send more than one individual to the workshop.
Scholarships: There will be financial aid available for some
participants. Stipends will be negotiated individually, and will be made on a first come, first served basis.
Applications: Contact the address below for a registration form --
registration is on a first come, first served basis.

Media Skills and Strategy Workshop for Sustainable Ag Activists
Mark your calendars! A two-day media workshop for sustainable ag
activists is scheduled to follow the February Midwest Sustainable Ag Working Group Meeting in Iowa. The workshop, to be held Februar
y 9-11, is designed to meet the needs of program staff who do
communications and outreach, as well as farmers and others who conduct field days and speak publicly on behalf of sustainable agriculture
. The workshop is organized by the Michael Fields Agricultural
Institute and funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.
The workshop will cover the following skills:
Message development
Writing for greater media impact
On-camera interviews and public speaking
Media tactics
Radio actualities ("home-produced" radio spots)
TV and radio talk shows
Maximizing attendance at and media coverage of your events
Creating individual media plans
Many of your colleagues from SAWG, the Campaign for Sustainable
Agriculture, and the Integrated Farming Systems network attended one of these workshops in August -- here's what they said about it.
"This was incredibly useful! One of the best hands-on ... trainings
I've attended in a long time. I'll definitely be using it back home."
"What a productive use of two days! At the media training we went
beyond talking about what is 'newsworthy' to learning how to make information 'newsworthy'. And then we went beyond talking about h
ypothetical situations to getting some practical experience -- actually
writing news releases, creating public service announcements, recording 30 second radio news spots and playing interviewee on c
amera. I learned skills that I was able to use right away when I
returned home."
"The training was worth every second. My enthusiasm for doing effective
media work has not diminished even now, 3 months later."
"Our media work had been haphazard and hit and miss. This workshop was
extremely valuable in making me more productive with the time I spend on media and communications work."
Workshop Logistics: The workshop will start the afternoon of Sunday,
Feb. 9 and run through early afternoon Feb. 11. It will be held at a 4-H camp about 45 minutes from Des Moines. Tuition will be
free, but participants will be responsible for transportation, room and
board. Room and board will cost about $70 per person. Some scholarship assistance will be available. Up to 30 people may att
end; projects and organizations may send more than one representative.
Registration forms and detailed information about accomodations and cost are available from the individuals listed below.
For more information: Contact Kat Griffith of the Michael Fields
Agricultural Institute at 608/233-5029; Wyatt Fraas of the Center for Rural Affairs at 402/254-6893; or Jane Sooby of the Nebraska Imp
act Project at 308/254-3918.
Enclosed you will find an announcement about an upcoming media training
workshop for sustainable agriculture activists, and a registration form for the event. We have just received word that the W.K
. Kellogg Foundation has approved funding for the workshop, so we want
to get the word out as fast as possible to potential participants. PLEASE PASS THIS INFORMATION ON TO ANYONE WHO CAN USE IT.
As a beneficiary myself of several media workshops put on by the Safe
Energy Communications Council, I can vouch for the quality, relevance and usefulness of the information. The SECC trainers are t
op notch, and they've helped a lot of people be a lot more effective in
their work. We at the Michael Fields Agricultural Institute and the Wisconsin Integrated Cropping Systems Trial are pleased to
offer you this training opportunity, and hope you will join us in
August!
Sincerely,
Kat Griffith
