Position Announcement: Temporary, Part-time Information Specialist,
National private nonprofit organization seeks a highly motivated,
outgoing person with a combination of work experience and training.
The person selected for this position will assist in research,
summarization and synthesis of technical sustainable agriculture
information. They will also assist in providing that information to
farmers and information providers interested in making agricultural
operations more environmentally sound. This is a part-time, temporary
position with the Appropriate Technology Transfer for Rural Areas
(ATTRA). ATTRA is a national, sustainable agriculture information
service administered by the private nonprofit organization, NCAT
(National Center for Appropriate Technology) and funded through USDA's
Rural Business-Cooperative Service (RBS).
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: An Information Specialist answers
incoming telephone calls and records initial information about caller
requests. In addition, the responsibilities include information
searches using printed and electronic sources and requires computer
use to organize, write, synthesize, edit and/or format information
including informational summaries, reference lists, database entries,
and other materials.
Requirements: The applicant should have a B. S. or equivalent
experience in agricultural journalism or a related field. Strong
technical writing and editing skills, computer skills, and research
skills are required. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to
organize and track multiple projects are also required. The
successful candidate will have an ability to work with people from
diverse educational, cultural and professional backgrounds in a
friendly and professional manner, in person and on the telephone.
Familiarity or experience in agricultural production is desirable. A
demonstrated interest in environmentally sound practices and
familiarity with concepts of sustainability and appropriate technology
is preferred. Applicant must communicate clearly by telephone, in
writing, and in person, and have strong organizational and
interpersonal skills. Strong computer and information management
skills, desktop and graphic design experience, especially in Windows
or Microsoft environment, preferred.
Compensation: The starting salary for the position is based upon
experience, but the minimum will be $9.19 per hour.
Working Environment: The position will be with the ATTRA program in
the NCAT-Fayetteville office on the campus of the University of
Arkansas in Fayetteville. Fayetteville is located in the Ozark
Mountains in the northwest corner of Arkansas. Creative teamwork
office environment. Must be able to use a computer keyboard and
screen, and work effectively with stress related to deadlines and
multiple priorities. Start and end dates will be negotiated based on
candidate's availability and ATTRA project priorities.
