Tropical Soil Management

Mr. Liebhardt,

I represent a non-governmental organization in Peru that is growing organic
coffee among small farmers in the north of the country near the border with
Ecuador. We have been operating at a relatively low level of agricultural
sophistication for about three years but have attained a good farmer base to
work from. I currently have a desire to establish a more rigorous soil
management program but don't have the expertise to proceed. It sounds like
you might be able to point me in the right direction to get started.

I would appreciate any guidance you might provide as technical resource to
proceed. The program would be implemented through training the farmers
themselves to make observations and pass information along for action at the
level of program management. I would like to avoid the need for sophisticated
chemical analysis but recognize that such support might be required on some
basis. I would like to carry out a field trial in late 96 with the plan
firmed up early enough to collect resources and materials.

Thanks for your attention,

Robert M. Kane, North American Coordinator
