Re: Mad Cow Disease, Oprah Show
Chuck,
I didn't see the original show and only caught the tail end of the industry
response on the follow-up. Oprah is now being blamed for falling cattle
futures!
I have been thinking about what all this may mean for several industries. If
prions exist and are causal in all of this, this is big-time scary stuff.
Prion proteins are not denatured by conventional steam sterilization
techniques (although they seem to succumb to the autoclave.)
What implications does all this have for the use of approved organic soil
amendments such as bone meal, blood meal, hoof and horn meal? I recognize
current theory has it that prion proteins are associated with nervous system
tissue only but this is an evolving field.
Where does gelatin fall in all of this? How does this affect capsulized
pharmaceuticals and herbs? Gelatin comes from connective tissue.
One of the newest and most promising treatment for MS is the daily
administration of mylein protein derived from cattle. This would seem to be
a very real threat to an already vulnerable population given what we know
about the transmittal process.
The piece of the Oprah show I did catch seemed to indicate a voluntary
ceasation of feeding tankage to herds on the part of cattle producers. I
wonder how far this will go. Will it extend to other segments of the meat
industry? Will the USDA jump on this in the form of regulation/ban?
Anybody know a source of good organic, grass-fed beef in N. California? How
about pigs? Chickens? Would you believe...
