I seem to recall seeing floating rafts or mats tethered to Chinese Junks
in Hong Kong upon which plants (leafy greens) were growing. I've also
seen same thing on a tv show about farming in India, but don't recall the
name of the program. The floating mat provides a structure for the plants
to grow upon, while all nutrients are taken from the river water. Mats
are quite waterlogged, but remain afloat. Extensive root systems grow
through the mats to the water. Like a giant Jiffy-7 peat pot. Hope I've
lead you in the right direction.
