Sharp sand is mined principally for construction (masonry) purposes. 
Because shipping is such a large proportion of the cost your best bet
would be to get the sand from a construction supplyer (any horticultural
supplyer probably got theirs' there too).

If you have any questions about the material you should be able to send a
sample to your state department of agriculture for a waste analysis ($4 in
NC)  That would check for heavy metals, pH, etc.  Generally testing for
agricultural chemicals is prohibitivly expensive;  you have to know what
you are testing for.  I don't imagine that anyone would have any need to
protect sand from insects or diseases.... but you never know.
