                      POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT


                       RESEARCH ASSISTANT
                COST OF COMMUNITY SERVICES STUDY
                     FREDERICK COUNTY, MD.


This is a full-time, temporary, contract position based in Frederick County,
MD which has been created solely for the purpose of gathering and
interpreting financial data for a Cost of Community Services (COCS) study
conducted by American Farmland Trust for the Frederick County AgriFuture
Roundtable. Responsibilities include working with public officials and
employees to obtain fiscal information on the cost to the community of an
array of land uses and how these costs are reflected in the local tax burden.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of AFT's Future
Harvest Project Coordinator and will be expected to work cooperatively with
AFT program staff. This position is available June 1, 1996. The contract
period is to run for four months. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

            Work with local and state officials to gather fiscal
            information through research and interviews. 

            Compile and collate the findings into a report to be published
            under the auspices of AFT. 

            Leave all data and raw materials with AFT for future
            reference. 

Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate detailed knowledge and experience of
actual (as opposed to predictive or assumptive) fiscal research in both an
urban and rural context. They must be extremely well-organized and meticulous
in following established research and methodology.

The candidate will be expected to be a self-motivator and hard worker.
Proficiency with Word Perfect and Lotus software is required.

The candidate will have two years of related experience or an advanced
degree in a related field, such as Regional or Urban Planning, Economics
or MBA. 

Compensation

By contract, as a stipend, commensurate with experience.
