Special Session on Sustainability at World Aquaculture '97
A special session on sustainability is currently being organized for
World Aquaculture 97 in
Seattle, Washington (February 20-23, 1997). We are soliciting
contributions to the special
session from within the membership of WAS, and more broadly, from
representatives of
constituencies with interest in aquaculture sustainability.
It has become apparent to us that the "problem" of sustainability has
been fairly well
characterized and defined in special sessions convened in San Diego
and Bangkok. The
emphasis of this particular special session will be to focus
attention on the "good works" that
have been done to promote sustainable aquaculture. The emphasis will
thus be more
action/activity oriented rather than on description/characterization.
The special session will take place over the course of 2 days and
will consist of four topic areas.
These are:
(1) integrated coastal zone management, with reference to
shrimp aquaculture,
(2) policy guidelines, regulations and environmental impact statements,
(3) sustainability indices and the quantification of sustainability, and
(4) best management practices.
Each topic area will be
addressed by presentations made over approximately 1/2 day.
Presentations may be either
contributed papers (15 minutes) or by invitation (30 minutes). The
end of each topic area will
feature a forum consisting of all speakers who have made
presentations during that part of the
session. The session moderator will have a list of prepared
questions and solicited questions
>from the audience that will be directed to the panel as a whole. It
is envisioned that the speakers
and the panel will represent the broadest possible spectrum of
perspectives and interest in
aquaculture sustainability.
Your participation in the special session is encouraged. Please
consider submitting an abstract
according to the format suggested in the call for papers. In
addition, please contact one of the
session organizers (see below) to indicate your interest. The call
for papers can be obtained by
