Re: rehab programs on farms
On June 3rd, William Lockeretz requested information, for a visiting
Scottish farmer, on farms (especially organic farms) in the Mid-Atlantic and
Northeast with a rehabilitation component.
One possible source for particular farms of this sort is the American
Horticultural Therapy Association. AHTA is a national organization that
works to promote and develop horticultural therapy or rehabilitation
programs for disabled or disadvantaged persons (including recovering
substance abusers).
*North American Horticulture* (T.M. Barrett, ed., MacMillan, 1992), a
directory of horticultural organizations and institutions, devotes an entire
chapter to hort therapy programs and contacts around the U.S. and Canada,
with addresses and phone numbers. Many are associated with botanical
gardens, but a few that are listed in this publication seem to be associated
with farms. AHTA can probably provide an updated listing of contacts for
farm-oriented programs.
In the past, the organization has offered guides to further reading on the
subject, so can probably help with that, too.
Contact: AHTA, 362-A Christopher Ave., Gaithersburg, MD 20879
