Alfred,

There can be fine shades of meaning, but I take it that direct
payments mean the government writes a check to the farmer for growing
or not growing a crop or for any other reason.  The government can
subsidize corn by saying it will buy all corn at $3.00 per bushel if
the market price falls below $3.  In this case the farmer benefits but
the support is indirect.
