Re: Food for Thought

Dear Steve,

The most obvious goverment mandated spray program subjects suburban
residents, micro-framers and citrus growers to malathion spraying in the Los
Angeles basin to control medfly.

We are currently concerned about a proposed mosquito-abatement district here
in south Placer county. As organic farmers with a riparian stream habitat
and pond on our micro fram, we would be subjected to governmet mandated
spraying which would seriously disrupt the pest-preditor balance on our farm.
Since I am chemically sensitized, it would drive me out of my own home,
literally.

Both these programs are "for the greater public good." The agricultural
sanctions are a little more subtle. If you don't spray your crop for medfly,
you simply can't sell it. How's that for incentive?

As to chemical companies pushing something that doesn't work, the obvious
question is - Work for what? At what cost? DDT provides excellent mosquito
control. ( also raptor control, beneficials control, human control...)
