CALL FOR ASSESSMENT TEAM PROPOSALS

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Small Ruminant Collaborative Research Support
Program (SR-CRSP) is currently in the last stages of small ruminant
research and training in Indonesia, Kenya and Bolivia. The present Call
for Assessment Team Proposals signals a new phase of livestock research
which will focus on regional issues; the identification and
prioritization of development problems by regional representatives; and
a process of team-building that will create and sustain a wide network
of collaborative partnerships. In this new phase, the CRSP program will
also focus more fully on issues of policy and impact; the effects of
livestock production on the environment; the importance of animal
products in human nutrition; and the role of animal agriculture in
national economic growth.

PROPOSAL: The new phase of development activities will concentrate in
three regions: East Africa, Central Asia and Latin America. During the
early part of 1996, regional workshops were held to identify problems
and potential areas for research and development. At each workshop,
regional representatives developed and prioritized a set of problem
models. Proposals are now being sought for the organization of
assessment teams, led by U.S. land grant universities, to pursue these
problems. Funded teams will be organized on the basis of their selected
problem model and will have one year to diagnose and re-define the
problem, build a research team and develop and submit a final research
proposal. All assessment team proposals must be received by 5:00 PST
August 23, 1996

BIDDERS' CONFERENCE: Applicants wishing to submit an Assessment Team
Proposal are strongly encouraged to attend the Bidders' Conference on
July 22, 1996 in Chicago, Illinois. The SR-CRSP Director, Montague
Demment, will make a presentation detailing the new approach and the
responsibilities of the Assessment Teams. The presentation will then be
followed by a question-and-answer period, during which potential
proposers are encouraged to clarify any aspect of the new SR-CRSP
program design and assessment team proposal procedure. To register for
the conference, send an email to snjohnson@ucdavis.edu. On the subject
line, type ³Registration². Include your name, address, phone and fax
number.

The conference will be held at the Howard Johnson International Hotel,
10249 West Irving Park Road, Schiller Park (near the Chicago O'Hare
Airport). Hotel reservations can be made directly with the hotel (800)
323-1239. Participants should mention the Small Ruminant CRSP and make
reservations by July 8th to assure that they receive the conference rate
of $64/night. After July 8th, the conference rate is subject to
availability. More detailed information on the conference is posted at
the SR-CRSP Web site.
